As a developer, it can be remarkably useful to get anything that you build out there and in production quickly – provided that you’re happy with it. One of the things that take the most amount of time is adding polish to all of the tiny, intricate details that make up the UI. For me – the icons are the biggest time sink. I could spend days fine-tuning the icons to be pixel perfect – after all, they play such a key role in any app that it’s important that they’re right. They need to be easy to understand, obvious and should be intuitive – and that’s why it can take so long to finely tune them.

As luck would have it, there’s a way to rapidly speed up your development for any app that you build – use an icon set. There are a huge number of designers out there who have done the hard part and created a set of icons that look good together, and who have been kind enough to give them away for free. I wanted to bring together a collection of some of my favourite free icon sets, in the hope that you’ll also find them useful for your next project. Be sure to check the license agreement before using them, and if you know of any others then please be sure to let me know in the comments.
