In 2020, 1 in 4 Americans transitioned to the work-from-home lifestyle. With this massive shift in what’s considered a “normal” workplace, many Americans have been struggling to find a healthy balance between personal lives and work.

The morning commute used to be the perfect time to set the tone for the day – spending some time alone, listening to music, drinking coffee, or simply psyching yourself up for the workday. Now, with the morning commute being nothing more than a walk down the hall, many people are wondering what to do with that extra step in their day. In this article, we’ll provide you with some productivity hacks to help you repurpose your commute time to the fullest.

Why Repurpose Commute Time?

By not commuting to work, the average American saves up to 35 minutes a day. While this may seem like an insignificant amount of time, these minutes add up to around 19 full workdays per year. Instead of sleeping through these workdays, you can take the necessary steps to craft the work-life balance you deserve.

4 Productivity Tips to Repurpose Your Commute Time

Working from home can add a great deal of efficiency to your workday. After all, the only traffic you’ll be dealing with is crossing paths with your roommate. However, without proper work-life balance, this may lead to added fatigue, migraines, and irritability. In order to avoid this, try using the time you would normally spend commuting to improve your work-life balance. To get started, try out the following four productivity hacks.

1. Prepare Your Workspace

Achieving work-life balance requires separating your work from your personal life. This can be done by creating an organized space dedicated only to work. No matter where this space is – your home office, kitchen or dining room table, or even your bedroom desk – take some time in the morning to clean it up and make sure it works for you.

2. Nourish Your Body and Mind

While you may have rushed out the door without eating anything before transitioning to a work-from-home format, this new normal provides the perfect opportunity for you to nourish your body well. Starting the day with a cup of coffee or tea and a hearty breakfast will energize you and encourage focus during the workday.

Further, getting dressed in your typical work clothes will put you in the right mindset to get your work done efficiently, just as you would at the office.

3. Get Some Chores Done

It’s hard to find time for chores when working a full-time job. Getting chores done in the morning, such as cleaning your room or bathroom, will set the tone for an organized and focused day.

Even better – consider grocery shopping or going to the gym before your workday rather than in the evening. Your future self will be grateful you did.

4. Find an Engaging Hobby

Consider using your extra 35 minutes of commute time to enjoy a low-commitment hobby. This may be listening to an engaging podcast, journaling, or reading a book your coworkers have been raving about. Why not use the extra time you have to do something new and enjoyable?

While the morning commute is nothing more than a memory for those now working from home, that doesn’t mean the commute routine should leave with it. In fact, commute time is essential to building a productive day. If you enjoyed these tips and are interested in learning more, be sure to check out Tommy John’s visual below.
